Brawl Stars is Supercell’s take on top-down arena shooters. These devs do amazing work, with some of the most popular mobile games being actively developed by them! With a mix of hero shooter mechanics and a lot of modes that require skill and teamwork, it’s not that hard to see how this is as big as it is. Intense multiplayer becomes accessible
This multiplayer game sees you play in teams or solo in short but intense matches with incredibly easy to learn controls. There are two virtual joysticks in the screen, the left one moves your character and the right one controls where you aim or just shoot the closest target if you press it instead of hold your thumb on it. Brawlers
As of writing this article, there’s over 90 brawlers in the game, with more coming every so often. Each brawler is colorful and full of personality, with a lot of them even having their own animated shorts to go along with them!
Each Brawler has distinct abilities, weapons, and super moves. For example, Shelly, the default character, is a shotgun-wielding brawler great for beginners. While some, like Jessie, deploy turrets to defend you while you attack the enemy or guard an objective. With this amount of characters in the game you will surely find one that matches your playstyle perfectly, whether you like playing aggressive, defensively or enjoy being support.
Each Brawler can be upgraded, and you can unlock new moves for them as they progress. Getting the currency for these upgrades can be quite slow, though, so make sure to try every brawler you can before committing to upgrading!
Events
Game modes in Brawl Stars are called Events, and that’s because of the peculiar way that they approach the multiple game modes. There’s a few that are permanent, but a lot of them switch out among each other. There’s a grand total of 52 game modes thus far. Some being completely unique and some being variations of other modes with small changes. They rotate daily and weekly. Each mode offers a different kind of challenge, and the rotating map pool keeps gameplay fresh. There are also special events, seasonal challenges, and community-made maps that further diversify the experience. Some of the best modes include:
- Brawl Ball: a mix of the traditional Brawl Stars combat with soccer. You have to coordinate with your team to defend your goal while sending the ball to the opponent’s. This one’s regarded as one of the best modes in the game!
- Showdown: playable solo, in duos and triple player teams, Showdown sees you fighting other players in a shrinking map. Whichever’s the last team standing wins!
- Heist: Defend your safe from the enemy team while you try to bust open the opponent’s safe!
- Gem grab: Each team has to pick up gems and once they reach 10 a timer goes down. Whichever team has 10 by the end of the timer wins. Careful though, protecting your teammate with the most gems is vital because they drop them if they’re eliminated!

Like every Supercell game, Brawl Stars is completely free to play, and it’s also not pay to enjoy! You can use money to speed up some of the brawler progression, but it’s mostly used to get cosmetics and brawlers early. The game doesn’t force ads on you, either, so you can experience the game without having to worry about being interrupted post match. You don’t really need to spend money to enjoy the full experience, as you can get all the brawlers and a lot of the cosmetics just by playing the game!
Teamwork and community
Brawl Stars has a vibrant community thanks to the fact that the game’s emphasis in teamwork. You can find friends in game by looking for clubs, which function like guilds do in most other games, and you can even find plenty of people online playing the games in sites like Subreddit or guides on YouTube.
The game also has a voice chat that uses your phone’s microphone to communicate to your team in case the in game sticker chats aren’t enough to communicate. Don’t worry, though, you can mute these if you don’t want to hear some stranger’s voice coming out of your phone!
If you’re like me thought and prefer to play solo, you don’t have to worry about it. The game offers plenty of solo game modes, and the matchmaking is good enough to get you paired with random players that are up to par with your skills. It’s just nice to know that there are plenty of resources for the more social players.
